Things that go *bump* in the night
Pffff – that was a rocky ending to an already rocky day.
Had to work at Hardenberg today, and was supposed to stay over at a hotel tonight to spend another day of work at the same client tomorrow. Over the course of the day we found out that there probably wasn’t enough work to be done to sustain me yet another day however, so I went home instead. Considering the fact that it is very, very foggy outside, which caused a delay of more than an hour that morning already (argh, 4 hours in the car just to get there) I wasn’t looking forward to it muchly. On the otherhand, I did look forward to spending the evening at home, also because I have developed a rotten cold and the hotel room doesn’t have a bath.
So I got in the car at half past four, drove off through the already foggy twilight, got on the A50, made it past Apeldoorn, and then it got quite busy on the highway. I made sure I kept as much space between me and the car before me, and in hindsight it is good that I did, because otherwise I’d have been sandwiched in the accident that followed. The car in front braked quite suddenly, I did as well but had plenty of space to spare. The car behind me hadn’t however. I saw it coming at me from behind with too high a speed, and there was nothing I could do. Lannie, whom I was talking to at the phone at the time (handsfree mind you!) only heard me say – whoops and now I am in an accident. The car hit me from behind, but as I said, I saw it coming so I braced myself. Didn’t even twitch a muscle in my neck.
When I got out of the car I saw that my licenseplate had dropped off and that her bumper was cracked, but that was about it. It was then that I noticed the other car behind the one that hit me. That one was pretty badly mashed up, and belonged to a woman married to a German. It was a German car too. That made it a difficult situation. I called 112, got police and a towtruck on the scene, we exchanged information, filled out forms, and I finally got home at around 9 in the evening. Bleh. Time for bath and bed.

What I still remember for the ones I’ve been in, is that there really is no way to describe the sound. All noise fades to the background, squealing tires, then a metallic thud…
Good that it was only some metal damage, and nothing worse. I’ve been lucky enough to avoid accidents in my life yet, but it sounds like not being a fun thing. Oww, wait, as a passenger I did have an accident, that time Alex decided to total one more car and did a 180 on the highway. But that was some time ago.
I’m glad to hear no one got hurt though!
I’ve never been in a car accident while I was driving. The few I’ve been in while my parents were driving involved fender benders and my mom freaking out for two hours, asking incessantly if we were okay.
Nothing serious, fortunately, and the last one was when I was about 12.
I have, however, narrowly avoided accidents while I was driving, and each time I hit some kind of zone where I react quickly and without thinking. It’s not until driving away that the gravity of the situation hits me, and I usually tremble all the way home. It’s a pretty freaky adrenaline rush.
*hugs* I’m so glad to hear that nothing worse happened! Been in a few accidents also and they are never a nice thing to got hrough, even if you go unscratched.
Glad to hear you are ok!
Now I think about it…. that is a very bad title you picked there….lol!
You actually deserve a thumbs up for having that much distance in front of you. Not many people hold enough distance to have only minor damage when being rearended
