The treasures of Egypt

Well, I’m back! Tired and with a runny nose, and a sore throat, but content nonetheless. Our flight yesterday was one of the fastest ever, 35 minutes and we were in Amsterdam again. The Man joked with one of the flight attendants that they must have broken a record.

Before we left yesterday, we visited the British Museum. We had wanted to go sightseeing but since it was raining – yes, this is London, remember – we skipped that and went somewhere where we could go inside.

Wow. What a museum. If you pass the fact that most of the stuff got there without consent of the country where it was found (but that’s the way it goes with these musea I guess)….I mean, a whole portion of the Partenon stood there! The Man remarked that probably, if it hadn’t been brought there, it would have been lost forgood. Which is very likely, so I guess there is a good side to it too.

We only covered the galleries with Egyptian, Roman and Greek art and artefacts, and it is a good thing we did, cause it ate up the time we had. I don’t think we have seen one tenth of the museum heh. Beautiful though. We took a lot of pictures. As soon as I can find the datacable which I need to transfer photo’s from my camera to my computer, I’ll upload them. I don’t know where I put the friggin’ thing.

Saturday night The Man and I strolled alongside the Thames. The Tower Bridge was beautifully lit and The Man played around with his camera, trying out different shutter times and such. You’ll see the results soon..if (yeah you guessed it) I find that datacable heh…

So, as you could guess, the trip to London was a succes. Very relaxed city. Very expensive, but I already said that. The Man bought himself a long coat to match his suit, hehehe and he put it on the last day. Since it was raining, he also carried an umbrella and looked quite the Brit. We laughed our heads off when a Dutch couple asked the way in crooked British and The Man answered in plain Dutch. Their eyes almost rolled out of their heads.

Well, lets see what I can do today. Not much work around here, it is very quiet, and like I said, I am starting to have a cold. Ugh. Tomorrow I have to hand in the car :( and then my working days for PinkRoccade are over. It feels strange.

Oh but I did go to Cairo and that was in one word magnificent. Not only the artefacts themselves, but the entourage. And of course, that moment I stood before the mask of Tutanchamon is priceless.

And no, the Egyptian stuff in the British museum isn’t that much…a small gallery compared to the Roman and Greek galleries. Still, I loved to see the Rosetta stone.

Yup, the British did take a lot with them.. I didn’t think the British museum was particularly interesting when it comes to Egyptian relics.. the Louvre is much better and also the one in Turin. Some say Leiden also has a lot.
I guess they’ve got the best stuff in Cairo ;)

I have seen the Egyptian artifacts in the British Museum to this year. I really wanted to see the Rosetta Stone. Wow!
But if you want to see all of the museum you have to go there for a couple of days :)
Good thing the entrance is free (except for some bigger temporary expositions)
