Guess I missed out on the news of the month

The Raelians eventually hope to develop adult clones into which humans could transfer their brains, Rael said. ”

Uh? What’s up with that? Sounds like the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers to me. I think this Raelian Cult with it’s Clonaid has gone totally off the deep end.

Of course it was only a matter of time before this happened. I mean, we’ve been experimenting with cloning for a long time now. The knowledge lay out there, just waiting to be picked up by a nut. On the other hand, I don’t think there is proof yet they are actually telling the truth.

If they are, I am not sure what to think of it. I am all for new techniques and better medicines and all, but cloning? Hmmm. I am not particularly religious, but still I have this icky feeling with us “creating” humans scientifically instead of following the natural course. Of course, you have in vitro fertilization, which is in a way also tampering with nature. So…where do you draw the line? I think IVF is a means to enhance the natural way. Cloning on the other hand does not even involve a fertilization anymore. You simply take some already existing cells and tweak em somehow so that they grow out to be the exact duplicate organism the cells stemmed from. I don’t know, somehow The Matrix comes to mind. And I keep having visions of a future world dominated by blue eyed, blond haired women and men who are all duplicates of eachother *shudder*

I can imagine organs being cloned…to make an end to waiting lists around the world. I can imagine other body parts, like skin, to be cloned…those techniques would stop the rejection problems you have now with implants and burn wounds. But to clone entire bodies and then use those as a means to immortality…ugh. Talk about a breach of ethics. If I let my imagination run wild, I can see institutions where the superrich can have a clone of themselves running around, pampered to the maximum and kept very healthy, to be used as a replacement in case something happens…just like a snake sheds it skin. Wasn’t there a movie based on that theme? I think we need to be very careful before we tread on that path. The implications of cloning could be major.

Ah well. I’ve always had an active imagination.

Yup, weird news to say the least… I just watched the Sixth Day a week ago or something. Really crappy movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but that deals with the same thing.

I have my doubts with that claim of that raelian cult.
But indeed it’s just a matter of time.

Besides what’s wrong with what nature gives you, why clone? :)
